Bollard Pull test

The bollard pull force is the traction delivered by a tugboat that is not moving. This allows vessels to be compared.

The bollard pull force is measured by having the tug pull on a specially constructed bollard or post. A measuring device is hung between the towing cable and the post to measure how many tonnes the tug pulls when set to full speed ahead. This gives a bollard pull force that is regarded as normative.
